500 residents left without power after heavy rains
Heavy rainfall in recent days caused significant disruptions across Gràcia, leaving approximately 500 residents without electricity for at least 48 hours, according to district councillor Laia Bonet. Floodwater accumulated at Ferrocarrils de Gràcia station, Plaça Gal·la Placídia, and the end of Riera de Cassoles street. Walls collapsed at Tenis La Salut and on Ca l’Alegre de Dalt street, while drainage systems were overwhelmed across the district.
Multiple parties demand action on infrastructure
Junts per Barcelona has submitted a formal request for a comprehensive report on all damage caused by recent rains, including to facilities, parks, gardens and public spaces. Spokesperson Elisenda Graell cited repeated incidents such as leaks, flooding and structural damage to buildings and construction sites. Comuns has focused on conditions at IES Montserrat Roig, where repeated flooding has raised safety concerns. A report from the school’s families’ association (AFA) dated 5 October 2026 states that water accumulates in multiple areas including classrooms, toilets, the canteen, technology rooms, the AFA office, cleaning storage and the gymnasium.
The water infiltrates electrical conduits and comes out through sockets, creating an obvious electrical hazard.
The AFA statement adds that a plasterboard panel fell from the gymnasium ceiling, highlighting the risk to students and staff. The school has reported the issue to the Barcelona Education Consortium repeatedly over the past decade, but remains on a waiting list for repairs.
Preventive maintenance plan to be proposed
Esquerra will bring a proposal for a preventive maintenance plan to the district plenary session on 27 October. The motion aims to identify vulnerable points across public spaces, facilities and services following the recent rainfall. The proposal calls for a diagnostic assessment to map areas prone to water accumulation, drainage failures and manhole overflows, as well as damage to pavements, trees and street furniture. Based on this, Esquerra wants the district to create a maintenance plan with a clear timeline, prioritising the most vulnerable locations and distinguishing between routine upkeep and structural investments.
