Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni would win the next municipal elections with a fragmented opposition, according to a poll published by El Periódico on the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy. The survey, conducted by GESOP, projects the PSC to hold around 10 city council seats, unchanged from 2023, in a 43-member council, maintaining its position as the largest party but falling short of an absolute majority.

The most striking shift is the emergence of Sílvia Orriols’ far-right party, Aliança Catalana, which is projected to win 5–6 seats, entering the Barcelona City Council for the first time. ERC, led by Elisenda Alemany, would rise from 5 to 6–7 seats, making it the second-largest force. Barcelona en Comú, without Ada Colau, would drop from 9 to 5–6 seats, while Junts would collapse from 11 to 5–6.

In such an atomized municipal plenary, and with no party close to an absolute majority, being the leading force almost guarantees governing.

Eight Parties in Plaça Sant Jaume

If results mirror the poll, eight political forces would sit in Plaça Sant Jaume from May 2027, up from six currently. The CUP would return with 2–3 seats after missing out in the last two terms. The PP would remain stable, while Vox would grow less than anticipated.

The current council operates under a fragile coalition. In 2023, Collboni became mayor despite finishing second, backed by Barcelona en Comú and the PP, an unexpected alliance that secured 23 of 41 votes. Xavier Trias, then leading Trias per Barcelona, failed to form a majority despite winning the most seats.

Path to Governance Remains Open

With no clear alternative majority, Collboni’s position has been consolidated through shifting alliances, primarily with ERC and occasionally with Junts and Barcelona en Comú. Both Vox and the PP have been excluded from governance.

All major parties have now named their lead candidates for the 2027 elections. The poll underscores that while no party is likely to govern alone, the largest force will hold decisive leverage in negotiations.
