Ada Colau has said she may take part in Spain’s 2027 general election for the Congress of Deputies, but has made her involvement conditional on a broader left-wing alliance that includes Podemos. For Barcelona voters, the decision could determine whether the city’s former mayor returns to a national ballot and which parties appear together on the left of the PSOE.

Colau, who was Barcelona mayor for eight years, told Público that parties in Sumar had asked her to consider taking a leading role. She said she was not currently standing for any post.

“We need a truly broad front, one that is brave and inspiring,” Colau said, adding that she would help if party talks moved in that direction.

Podemos membership is Colau’s condition

Colau said the proposed candidacy must include more forces than the present Sumar grouping. Her position links a possible return to institutional politics to an agreement involving Podemos, whose leading figure for the general election is Irene Montero.

She had said on 14 September that she would consider returning to frontline politics if she could be especially useful for a specific purpose. Her latest comments leave open a role in the 2027 campaign, rather than confirming that she will be a candidate.

Four parties have agreed on the Frente Amplio name

IU, Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid and Comuns have agreed to use the name Frente Amplio for their alliance, according to IBTimes. The four parties agreed that name months ago, although Colau’s condition that Podemos join the project goes beyond the grouping described in that report.

  • Comuns, the Catalan left-wing party with which Colau is associated.
  • Movimiento Sumar, the party within the wider Sumar platform.
  • Izquierda Unida (IU), a national left-wing alliance.
  • Más Madrid, a Madrid-based left-wing party.

In the Público interview, Colau rejected the idea of a simple individual solution to the left’s leadership debate.

“Right now, I am not a candidate for anything,” she said.
