Weather warnings

  • Meteocat has issued its highest level of warning for torrential rain (5 out of 6). In Barcelona city and the surrounding area, conditions are forecast to be at their worst between 20:00 tonight and 02:00 on Sunday. Protecció Civil's ES-Alert message in Spanish gave the wrong time, stating 00:00; it has since been corrected to 02:00.
  • Meteocat has additionally issued a severe-weather warning (level 6 of 6, the maximum) for the Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Vallès Occidental and Barcelonès, in force until 21:00. Forecasters warn of hail over 2 cm in diameter, wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h, downbursts and the possibility of tornadoes or waterspouts.
  • Storms have stalled over areas of the Maresme and Vallès Oriental. At Cabrils, Meteocat logged 64.2 litres per square metre within 30 minutes. According to 3Cat, Santa Maria de Palautordera saw flooding, with 55 litres per square metre falling in 40 minutes.
  • Protecció Civil has urged the public to cut back on travel while the rainfall is at its heaviest, to stay away from rieres, underpasses and flooded ground, never to go into basements or car parks if water levels rise, and to ring 112 in an emergency.
  • Barcelona City Council has halted refuse collection and is asking residents to keep their rubbish indoors. In Badalona, a shelter for homeless people has opened at the Can Cabanyes civic centre. Pompeu Fabra University shut its campuses and libraries at 19:30. Flood barriers have been installed by TMB at Parc Logístic station on metro line 9 South.
  • Sunday: the rain will persist but with less force, and temperatures will fall sharply. Monday: according to Meteocat, an isolated upper-level low may trigger a fresh bout of rain across a wide area, including inland. The weather should begin to settle on Tuesday.
