Diada Holiday Opening Rules Apply in Tourist Zones
Friday 11 September 2026 is Catalonia's National Day (Diada de Catalunya), a public holiday across the region. However, under the local commercial calendar, stores in the Zone of Great Tourist Influx (ZGAT) may open on Sundays and holidays from 15 May to 15 September between 12:00 and 20:00. This exception allows key city-centre shopping centres to remain operational despite the holiday. The Diada marks one of the final days of this year’s extended summer opening period, which ends on Sunday 13 September, with normal Sunday closures resuming from 15 September.
Main Centres Open in Barcelona City Centre
Westfield Glòries will be open on 11 September, with shops and Carrefour operating from 12:00 to 20:00. Restaurants and the cinema maintain their usual schedules. The centre has explicitly listed Catalonia National Day among its 2026 opening holidays on its official website. Similarly, Diagonal Mar Shopping Centre will open from 12:00 to 20:00, in line with its summer policy allowing openings on Sundays and holidays until 13 September. Retailers such as Decathlon have already posted exceptional hours for the day. L’Illa Diagonal also remains open, with its calendar confirming Sunday and holiday operations until 13 September. Fnac has specifically confirmed it will operate from 12:00 to 20:00 on Diada. Arenas de Barcelona, located at Plaça Espanya, is included in the ZGAT zone and will open to serve tourists visiting its shops and rooftop terrace. Maremagnum Barcelona, situated in Port Vell, operates under a special regime that permits holiday openings regardless of the ZGAT rules, and will also be open.
Centres Closing Outside Central Barcelona
Westfield La Maquinista will be closed on 11 September. Its official 2026 calendar lists the Diada as a closing holiday, with shops and Carrefour shut. Restaurants and entertainment venues may follow separate schedules. Outside Barcelona, Splau Shopping Centre in Cornellà de Llobregat will be closed, as the ZGAT exemption does not apply. The centre’s official calendar includes 11 September among its non-opening holidays. Finestrelles Shopping Centre in Esplugues de Llobregat will also remain closed, with both 11 and 21 September listed as holidays without general retail access. In L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Gran Via 2 Shopping Centre will not open generally. Individual stores, including Decathlon, have marked 11 September as a closure day according to L'Hospitalet Turisme.
Under the Generalitat’s summer trading resolution, only establishments in designated tourist zones may open on holidays between 15 May and 15 September.
What Comes Next?
After 11 September, only Sunday 13 September remains as a permitted holiday opening day. From 15 September onwards, the special summer opening period ends, and most shops in Barcelona will return to traditional Sunday closures.
