Anna Navarro, the Junts deputy who was second on Carles Puigdemont’s 2024 Catalan election list, has resigned her seat in the Catalan Parliament. The party said on Tuesday, 21 July, that she will step down at the end of the parliamentary session for “personal and professional” reasons.

For voters in Catalonia, the immediate consequence is a change in Junts’ parliamentary representation after this week’s final plenary sitting. Navarro will remain on the party’s permanent leadership and executive committee, Junts said.

“Personal and professional reasons” were given by Junts for Navarro’s decision to leave the chamber.

According to the party’s statement, Navarro told Puigdemont, Junts secretary general Jordi Turull and parliamentary group president Mònica Sales before the announcement was made public.

Former business recruit had a limited parliamentary role

Navarro joined Puigdemont’s candidacy in April 2024 after a career in technology-related companies in the United States. Her recruitment was intended to strengthen Junts’ economic profile ahead of the Catalan election.

She had been considered a possible candidate for a Generalitat post connected to new technologies if Junts entered government. That prospect ended when Salvador Illa was invested as president of the Generalitat, Catalonia’s regional government.

During her two years as a deputy, Navarro did not take a prominent role in Parliament or in the party’s principal day-to-day decisions, according to ARA’s account of the resignation.

Navarro described her time in the chamber as a period of “intensity, demand and learning”, and thanked colleagues for the opportunity to serve Catalonia from Parliament.

Lourdes Ciuró is next on Junts’ Barcelona list

La Vanguardia reports that former minister Lourdes Ciuró is the next candidate on Junts’ electoral list following Navarro’s resignation. Ciuró would need to accept the seat.

Navarro’s last plenary sitting is expected to take place this week, as the current parliamentary period ends.
