## Bridge Repairs Under Way in Six-Month Project

Maintenance and rehabilitation works on the Bac de Roda bridge in Barcelona have begun this week, the city council confirmed on Saturday. The bridge, which links the Sant Andreu and Sant Martí districts over railway tracks, will undergo a comprehensive upgrade over the next six months. The €2.1 million project, funded under Barcelona City Council’s Pla Endreça, aims to repair structural damage to concrete and steel elements, renovate pavements, improve drainage systems and restore ornamental features and street furniture, according to council statements published on 3 October 2026.

## Phased Work to Minimise Disruption

Works will be carried out in phases to maintain access for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, with at least one lane kept open for traffic at all times. Temporary diversions may be introduced when upper sections are being repaired.

> With this action, we not only improve a key infrastructure for the city, but we guarantee durability, safety and accessibility.

Marta Villanueva, councillor for Sant Andreu, emphasised that the bridge’s rehabilitation is integral to the wider transformation of the La Sagrera area, helping to better connect the two districts socially and physically.

## Historic Structure Designed by Calatrava

Designed by renowned architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the Bac de Roda bridge was completed in 1987 to link Carrer Felip II and Carrer Bac de Roda, which had been separated by rail lines. Originally conceived as a combined walkway and road bridge, it holds notable architectural and cultural value. The first phase will focus on repairing cracks, damp and corrosion, followed by a full repaint and the application of a permanent anti-graffiti coating on surfaces up to three metres high. Safety and accessibility for pedestrian and cycle routes will also be enhanced.
