Spain’s early general elections on 29 November 2026 will require thousands of citizens to serve on polling station electoral boards. With the official call expected in the *Boletín Oficial del Estado* (BOE) on 6 October, the process to appoint these officials is set to begin.

Under the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime, public lotteries to select presidents, members and alternates for each electoral board must take place between the 25th and 29th days after the election is formally called. This means municipal draws are scheduled to occur between 31 October and 4 November.

Each town hall has discretion over the exact date and method of the lottery. Once held, selected individuals must be notified within three days. For example, if a draw occurs on 4 November, notification should arrive by 7 November at the latest. However, the Ministry of the Interior clarifies on its Infoelectoral portal that late notification does not invalidate appointment, particularly if replacements are needed.

## How Notifications Work

Official notification is delivered to the home via registered mail or by local notification services, which may include Local Police. It includes both the appointment notice and a manual outlining duties. Failure to receive it by the three-day deadline does not guarantee exemption from selection.

It is important to distinguish this from the electoral roll card, which only informs voters of their polling location and does not indicate board membership.

## Right to Decline

Those with justified reasons for not serving have seven days from receipt of the notice to submit a formal objection to their Zonal Electoral Board, along with supporting documentation. Valid grounds may include health issues, professional commitments or personal circumstances.

> Anyone selected will play a key role in ensuring the integrity and smooth operation of election day.

With opinion polls suggesting a tight race ahead, the role of electoral board members will be more visible than in previous votes. The snap election, called by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez after his housing reform package failed in parliament, marks a pivotal moment in Spain’s political landscape.
