## Protest over reduced gym access

Parents, guardians, and basketball players from the Vedruna school in Gràcia blocked Carrer de Gran de Gràcia for two hours on Thursday 22nd October, from 17:00 to 19:00, to protest a reduction in their access to the gymnasium at the public Escola Josep Maria de Sagarra. The facility, located in the Penitents area, has been used by the school’s basketball teams under a rental agreement managed by the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona. The protest follows a decision by the consortium, announced on 6th May 2026, to allocate two afternoons per week and Saturday mornings to CB Coll, another local basketball team. Vedruna families say they were given the news too late to secure alternative training spaces ahead of the current season.

## Impact on youth basketball

The Vedruna school, a privately run but publicly subsidised centre known as a *centre concertat*, runs federated male and female basketball teams from the third year of primary school onwards, as well as recreational play for younger children from I4 and I5\. While the school has its own small gym, Mar Freixa, a parent spokesperson, said it does not meet safety or regulatory standards for official matches. For the past decade, the team has used the larger public gym at Escola Josep Maria de Sagarra for evening training sessions from 20:00 to 23:30 and weekend matches. Under the new arrangement, Vedruna has lost 40% of its previous weekly usage time, which had amounted to 35 hours and 50 minutes out of a possible 37 hours.

> We are not asking for privileges, we are asking for equity, transparency, and opportunity.

The protest march began at the Vedruna school and ended at Espai Fontana, where the Festa de l’Esport de Gràcia was taking place and the school was due to receive an award. There, a young player read a manifesto defending the club’s future.

## Consortium defends shared access

The Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona, jointly funded by the Generalitat and Barcelona City Council, maintains that Vedruna still has the majority of booking time. It argues that it is fair for CB Coll, a local club whose members include students from the Sagarra school, to gain better access to a public facility. CB Coll now uses the gym two afternoons a week and on Saturday mornings from 08:30 to 12:00\. The consortium states that the management of public school facilities must be balanced to benefit the maximum number of young people and organisations. The Gràcia District has confirmed it has been assisting Vedruna in identifying alternative facilities, as it does with other local groups, but no new arrangements have been finalised.
