The man, a Dominican national, approached police during a routine identification check in the late afternoon, shouting aggressively and making xenophobic remarks directed at North African people. As he moved abruptly towards one officer, placing a hand near his waist, the agents observed what they believed to be the outline of a firearm. Fearing an imminent threat, they swiftly subdued and restrained him on the ground. Additional officers arrived to secure the scene, and during a more thorough search, two loaded pistols were found concealed on different parts of his body. According to police sources, one of the weapons was in a condition ready for immediate use. The man, who does not hold a firearms licence, stated he had possessed the weapons for several years but initially refused to say where he was heading with them. He was arrested and charged with illegal possession of weapons. --- ## Prevented Attack, Say Police > The rapid intervention prevented not only the circulation of two lethal weapons but potentially a violent incident. Police sources stress the seriousness of the incident, describing both weapons as 'ready to kill'. The man’s actions, approaching closely while placing his hand near a loaded firearm, suggest he may have intended to use it. His intentions remain unclear, but authorities believe the swift action of the two officers likely prevented an attack. ## Rising Gun Crime Concerns The seizure comes amid growing concern over firearm-related incidents in Barcelona. Data from the Mossos d'Esquadra indicates a 45% increase in shootings during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with the city at the epicentre. Authorities have warned of the increasingly normalised presence of guns on the streets, linked to recent violent disturbances. On Saturday 24th October, coordinated looting events in the city centre led to 128 arrests. A subsequent security meeting on Thursday 29th October, attended by the mayor, regional interior minister, and heads of police and judicial bodies, agreed on maximum coordination and firmness in response to further violent calls. This incident underscores ongoing tensions and the heightened police vigilance in public spaces. --- *Sources:* [*El Nacional*](https://elcaso.elnacional.cat/es/noticias/se-abalanza-sobre-policia-intenta-quitar-dos-pistolas-municionadas-listas-matar-en-barcelona%5F1719184102.html?ref=barna.news)*,* [*Generalitat de Catalunya*](https://mossos.gencat.cat/ca/comunicacio/noticies/?ref=barna.news)*,* [*Ajuntament de Barcelona*](https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/premsa/2026/10/29/inclou-material-audiovisual-la-junta-local-de-seguretat-de-barcelona-acorda-maxima-coordinacio-i-fermesa-policial-i-judicial-davant-convocatories-dactes-violents-el-proper-dissabte/?ref=barna.news)*.* --- ### Related on Barna.News - [Updated: Mossos thwart Blocus protest in Barcelona](https://barna.news/mossos-thwart-blocus-protest-in/) - [Police Meet Shopkeepers Over New Protest Calls in Sants](https://barna.news/police-meet-shopkeepers-over-new/) - [12-Year-Olds Among 133 Arrested in Barcelona Riots](https://barna.news/12-year-olds-among-133-arrested-in/) - [Mossos to deploy maximum units in Barcelona on Saturday](https://barna.news/mossos-to-deploy-maximum-units-in/)
