## Storm Damage Exposed Vulnerabilities

Torrential rains in September and October 2026 caused significant flooding across Barcelona's metro network, with water entering platforms and tracks at several stations. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the city’s public transport operator, has acknowledged the events as extraordinary, pushing the 125.4-kilometre network and its 165 stations beyond previously tested limits. Xavier Flores, CEO of TMB, said the downpours 'tested the network' and placed the operator in 'a situation we had never experienced before'. Passengers reported severe leaks, with some, like Òscar Salcedo, stating that 'the water reached their ankles'. At Liceu station, visible water marks remain on walls, and passenger Odette Castro recalled having to use an umbrella indoors during downpours. Mundet station also suffered damage, with manholes lifted due to pressure from surging water.

## New Measures Under Review

---

In response, TMB is assessing flood resilience across the entire network. The operator is considering mobile flood barriers, reinforcing water pumps, and better protection for critical infrastructure such as signalling systems. These measures aim to prevent water ingress during intense rainfall events, which are becoming more frequent. Flores acknowledged that while the metro system was built to withstand typical conditions over its more than 100-year history, recent weather patterns demand updated defences. 'The metro network is prepared for what it has been prepared for over these 100 years,' he said, indicating the need for adaptation.

## Unions Call for Improved Emergency Training

> 'We want training and information: what can be done and what cannot.'

Jordi Gómez, representing union UGT on TMB’s negotiating committee, stressed the need for better risk preparedness among staff. Workers’ unions are demanding enhanced training programmes for emergency situations, particularly those involving flooding and service disruption. TMB publishes annual transport data as of 1 January each year, with the most recent figures available for 2025, confirming the network’s scale and usage. The operator runs 165 trains during peak hours across eight lines, serving nearly 480 million journeys annually. The review comes as climate resilience becomes a growing priority for urban infrastructure. While no immediate timetable has been set for implementing new defences, TMB confirms the assessment is underway.
