## Protests Begin at Key Road Junctions

At 7:15am on Tuesday 8 September 2026, striking teachers began blocking major access roads to Barcelona, marking the start of the new school year with widespread disruption. Around 80 demonstrators cut both lanes of the coastal ring road (ronda litoral) at exit 22 in Barceloneta, halting traffic in both directions. Approximately ten minutes later, about 100 people blocked the upper ring road (ronda de dalt) in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. Simultaneously, in Esplugues de Llobregat, around 50 protesters stopped vehicles from entering Barcelona at Plaça Elisabeth Eidebenz. By 8am, some 150 people had blocked the C-58 motorway near Sant Quirze del Vallès in the direction of Barcelona. These actions were coordinated by education unions USTEC, CGT, Cos, and Intersindical, who called the strike after failing to reach agreement with the Catalan government over working conditions.

> The strike begins as the last term ended, with no resolution in sight.

## Unresolved Disputes Spark Industrial Action

The strike follows months of stalled negotiations between teaching unions and the Generalitat de Catalunya. Despite a partial agreement reached at the end of the previous academic year, union representatives argue that the improvements secured are insufficient to address ongoing issues in the education sector. Teachers warn that the 2026–2027 school year will continue under the same conditions unless the government meets their demands. The industrial action coincides with the first day of term for most students across Catalonia, adding pressure on families and transport networks. The Síndic de Greuges, Catalonia’s ombudsman institution, has expressed concern about the impact of such actions, particularly opposing the suspension of school excursions as a form of protest. However, no official statement from the Department of Education has been released in response to the roadblocks.

- Strike began at 7:15am on 8 September 2026
- Locations affected: ronda litoral, ronda de dalt, C-58, and Plaça Elisabeth Eidebenz
- Organised by: USTEC, CGT, Cos, and Intersindical unions
- Reason: Unmet demands despite previous agreement
