A late-night fire in a Tarragona residential building on Friday injured nine people, four of whom required hospitalisation. The blaze prompted a major emergency response and dramatic evacuations from the building’s facade.

The incident occurred in the Torreforta neighbourhood of the historic port city. Emergency services received the first alerts at approximately 11:55 PM, reporting a fire on the first floor of a block of flats on Carrer del Penedès. A swift, coordinated response involved five units from the [Bombers de la Generalitat](https://interior.gencat.cat/ca/arees%5Fdactuacio/bombers/?ref=barna.news), the Catalan fire brigade, and five ambulances from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM).

## Dramatic Ladder Rescues

As firefighters arrived, they found the blaze concentrated in a first-floor flat, with smoke quickly filling the building’s common areas and stairwell. To ensure the safety of residents trapped on upper floors, emergency crews deployed a ladder truck (*autoescala*) to conduct several evacuations directly from the building’s exterior.

While some teams rescued residents, others entered the building to tackle the source of the fire. According to reports from [El Caso](https://elcaso.elnacional.cat/es/noticias/nueve-heridos-incendio-piso-tarragona-obligado-evacuar-vecinos-fachada%5F1601039102.html?ref=barna.news), the fire was contained within the originating apartment and prevented its spread to adjacent properties. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters ventilated the flat and the main stairwell to clear the heavy smoke.

## Medical Response and Aftermath

SEM paramedics treated nine people at the scene, primarily for smoke inhalation. Five of the injured were assessed and discharged on-site without further medical attention.

Additionally, four others went to local hospitals for treatment. Two were taken to the [Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII de Tarragona](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hospital+Universitari+Joan+XXIII+de+Tarragona?ref=barna.news), two in a mild condition and a third in a less serious condition. A fourth person was transferred to the Hospital de Sant Pau i Santa Tecla, also in a less serious condition.

The Guàrdia Urbana, Tarragona’s local police force, cordoned off Carrer del Penedès and surrounding streets to facilitate the emergency operation and ensure public safety. After extinguishing the fire, the Bombers conducted a thorough inspection of the building and confirmed no structural damage, a relief for residents awaiting news of their return.

The fire’s cause remains unknown and is under official investigation. This incident highlights the inherent risks of urban residential fires, recalling a recent [flat fire in Barcelona’s Les Corts district](https://barna.news/les-corts-flat-fire-injures-two-displaces-27-residents/) that also required a significant emergency response. It also underscores the crucial role of Catalonia’s emergency services, who have been active across the region responding to various incidents.
