## Price Ranges from €1 to €5

The cost of a 'tallat' (espresso with a dash of milk) in Barcelona varies by as much as €4 depending on the neighbourhood, according to data from *The 'Tallat' Census*, a joint project by Domestic Data Streamers and Cedra. Between 10 and 23 September 2026, researchers called 2,411 cafes, bars, bakeries and restaurants across the city, collecting 836 verified prices. The cheapest tallat surveyed costs €1 in a premises in Dreta de l’Eixample, the same neighbourhood where the most expensive one is sold for €5\. The average price across the city is €1.76, though the median is €1.70\. The most common price, found in 151 of the 836 establishments, is €1.60.

## Neighbourhoods Show Stark Contrasts

Prices differ significantly between districts. Barceloneta has the highest median at €2.29, while Can Peguera and El Coll share the lowest at €1.40\. In 20% of surveyed establishments, two out of every ten, a tallat costs €2 or more, concentrated particularly in central areas. Dreta de l’Eixample leads with 20 such venues, followed by Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample (13) and Sant Antoni (11). In contrast, areas like Bon Pastor, Parc de la Llacuna, Poblenou, Maternitat and Sant Ramon each have only one or no venues charging €2 or more for a tallat. Ciutat Vella sees nearly four in ten establishments charging €2 or more, while Horta-Guinardó has none.

> A 'tallat' is a good thermometer for talking about gentrification, inflation. it's a close and easy language for everyone.

## Tourism, Not Income, Drives Prices

The study examined whether income levels or tourism pressure influenced tallat prices. It found no clear correlation with per capita income. In Raval, the neighbourhood with the lowest income, a tallat costs €1.80, more than in high-income Tres Torres, where it averages €1.70\. Similarly, despite Sarrià having double the income of Gòtic, a tallat is 10 cents cheaper there. Instead, proximity to the city centre and tourist activity, particularly the density of Airbnb-listed apartments, are stronger predictors of higher prices. The data was gathered through telephone surveys on weekdays, covering all 73 neighbourhoods, though comparative analysis focused on the 43 with at least eight valid responses. The project includes an interactive website where users can guess tallat prices, compare estimates and explore how coffee costs relate to urban dynamics. Researchers plan to repeat the study in coming years to track changes over time.
