# Study Probes Housing Crisis in L'Hospitalet's Blocs Florida

A research project led by anthropologists from the University of Barcelona is investigating the housing and social challenges in the Blocs Florida neighbourhood of L'Hospitalet, as reported by [Lhdigital](https://lhdigital.cat/noticies/les-condicions-habitacionals-dels-blocs-florida-a-estudi/?ref=barna.news) on Wednesday 4th November 2026.

The study, initiated at the request of local residents’ associations and the housing cooperative Les Juntes, focuses on living conditions, housing rights struggles, and speculative real estate dynamics in the area. It is supported by a €10,000 grant from the Creu Casas Sicart 2026 programme, part of the Xarxa Vives d’Universitats network.

Since March 2026, the research team, including UB anthropologist and local resident Irene Sabaté Muriel, has interviewed residents, municipal officials, housing agency staff, landlords, and real estate agents to map how capital flows through the neighbourhood.

> “We’ve spoken with people living in the area and those making decisions that affect it,” Sabaté Muriel told Lhdigital.

The study highlights the long-standing vulnerability of Blocs Florida, a district historically home to newly arrived populations and marked by housing insecurity. Researchers aim to identify the actors perpetuating precarity and explore ways to reverse it.

A key focus is the community-led alternative of Les Juntes, which has already secured around fifteen homes in the area through non-speculative ownership models. The project aims to amplify such grassroots initiatives in shaping the neighbourhood’s future.
