## Vall d'Hebron Activates Emergency Plan

Vall d'Hebron Hospital has activated its self-protection plan with firefighters after sustaining multiple structural damages during heavy rains on Sunday and Monday, 5 October 2026\. According to the Department of Health, the storm caused significant issues with facades, windows, and roofs across the complex. Several non-clinical buildings at the site suffered flooding, while critical medical equipment was also affected. A sterilisation steam unit and two MRI machines were taken offline, and incidents were reported in the neonatology unit, surgical areas, blood draw stations, pharmacy services at the General Hospital, and the pre-surgical area of the Children’s Hospital. Raúl Ceresuela, nursing union delegate at Satse Catalunya, noted that Vall d'Hebron is composed of buildings from different construction eras. Despite ongoing renovations and planned investments, he said there are still vulnerable points requiring a comprehensive review.

## Multiple Primary Care Centres Affected

Across Barcelona, at least nine primary care centres (CAPs and EAPs) reported leaks and flooding. These include EAP Raval Nord, GAPIC Muntanya, EAP El Clot, CSMA Ciutat Vella, CAP Larrard, EAP Poble Sec, EAP Ramon Turró, Fundació Nou Barris, and Centre Fòrum. At EAP Poble Sec, water and mud entered the ground floor, disrupting operations. In L'Hospitalet, the Catalan Institute of Oncology experienced flooding in its access zone and car park, though the issue has since been resolved.

> The Satse Catalunya nursing union has called for structural investment to adapt healthcare infrastructure to increasing extreme weather events.

## Regional Health Sites Report Disruptions

Outside central Barcelona, Granollers General Hospital faced recurring problems in its basements and Emergency department, particularly affecting the Pharmacy area. The Department of Health confirmed operating rooms remained unaffected, and emergency patient flows were redirected. Mataró Hospital’s helipad is currently out of service due to elevator failures caused by the storm. In the Vallès Oriental region, laboratory analyses have been suspended. At least 25 healthcare centres across Catalonia were impacted by the storm, according to reporting by *Redacción Médica*. The weather event, described as a 'minihuracán', disrupted transport, safety, and routine operations across the regional health network. The Department of Education confirmed that at least nine schools across Catalonia will remain closed on Monday due to storm damage.
