Six families who had been living in a rented commercial unit above a former supermarket on Avinguda d'Alfons XIII, in Badalona's Artigues neighbourhood, were evicted on Wednesday, according to Línia Xarxa. The eviction took place during heavy rain across the metropolitan area and involved up to five children, including a three-month-old baby.

The families said they had paid rent to live in the premises, which were not authorised for residential use. Línia Xarxa reported that the judge did not request the attendance of social services because the children were considered to be well cared for.

## Families say rent rose to €1,600

According to the report, the tenancy contract showed that the families had occupied the commercial unit since 2017\. They said the monthly rent had recently risen to €1,600 without being communicated to them, and that they were now paying up to €2,000 to make up for arrears.

- The eviction involved six families living in the same commercial premises.
- Up to five children were among those affected, including a baby aged three months and children aged between five and 16.
- The premises were on Avinguda d'Alfons XIII in the Artigues neighbourhood.

## Dispute over municipal registration and emergency housing

Línia Xarxa reported that Badalona City Council sources told Cadena SER that the families had never been entered on Badalona's official municipal resident register. The families said they were registered in Barcelona and claimed they had faced difficulties registering in Badalona.

Being on the municipal resident register records a person's usual address in a municipality and is used by councils when administering local services. The report did not state the nature of the difficulties described by the families.

Aïda Llauradó, lead candidate for the Comuns municipal group in next year's local elections, criticised Mayor Xavier García Albiol over what she said was a lack of temporary accommodation after the eviction.

> “We have a City Council that does not offer temporary accommodation even to families with children and babies in the pouring rain after being evicted.”

Llauradó also referred to the closure of the municipal shelter and said Badalona lacked resources for people experiencing homelessness. She called for explanations and urgent measures from the council.
