## Barcelona Under Water After Extreme Rainfall

More than 178 litres of rain per square metre have fallen in parts of Barcelona overnight, with the Raval district recording the highest total so far, according to data from the Catalan Meteorological Service (Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya). In surrounding municipalities, Cornellà has exceeded 150 litres per square metre, while Cabrils, Granollers and Mataró saw accumulations above 220 litres by 05:00 on Sunday. The storm, described as a 'minihuracà mediterrani' (Mediterranean minihurricane), triggered red weather alerts across 20 comarcas. Meteocat warned of sudden flash floods, intense rainfall rates exceeding 40 litres per square metre in 30 minutes, and prolonged downpours potentially reaching 200 litres within 24 hours.

## Emergency Services Overwhelmed in Baix Llobregat

Emergency crews responded to around 80 incidents between 20:00 and 22:00 on Saturday in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà and Esplugues, mostly for flooded basements and streets. The Ajuntament de L'Hospitalet activated the Gornal sports complex as an emergency shelter, providing beds for homeless people and residents unable to return home.

> We are not aware of any personal injuries,

said David Quirós, mayor of l'Hospitalet, speaking to Catalunya Ràdio. The CUAP Pura Fernández health centre was evacuated temporarily due to roof leaks.

## Rivers Swell and Transport Disrupted

The Besòs river’s flow increased fiftyfold, while the Llobregat rose fifteen times its daytime level, reaching 165 cubic metres per second at Sant Joan Despí. Authorities continue monitoring both waterways for overflow risk. Public transport has been severely affected. Rodalies, FGC and high-speed trains face restrictions. Lines L1 and L5 of the Barcelona metro operate only on partial routes. The Trambesòs (T4, T5, T6) and Trambaix services have been fully suspended. Multiple municipalities including Barcelona, Terrassa, Mataró and Sant Cugat have opened indoor shelters. Protecció Civil advises against all non-essential travel and outdoor activities during peak rainfall periods.
