## Chinese Competition and Electrification Pressures

Seat, the Catalan automotive brand, faces an uncertain future as the Volkswagen Group restructures in response to rising Chinese competition and the shift to electric vehicles. According to the Volkswagen Group’s latest financial update, global operating results in the first half of 2026 were around 12 percent below the prior year, despite increased deliveries outside China. The group’s sales in the Chinese market slumped by 20 percent, weakening its overall position.

The cost of manufacturing electric car batteries in Europe is 30 percent higher than in China, the Catalonia Automotive Industry Cluster (CIAC) told journalists this week. For complete electric vehicles, the price gap widens to 40 percent. Seat sources confirm this disparity makes it difficult to compete on price, especially as Chinese brands offer cheaper electrified models in European markets.

## Volkswagen’s Transformation Plan

Under CEO Oliver Blume, the Volkswagen Group is accelerating a transformation programme to improve competitiveness, reduce costs, and strengthen its electric vehicle line-up. The group expects a robust full-year performance despite challenges, citing over 70,000 orders for its new Electric Urban Car Family centred on the ID. Polo within weeks of launch. Orders for all-electric vehicles in Europe rose by more than 50 percent in the second quarter of 2026.

> "Despite such progress, our operating margin of 3.8 percent remains too low and underlines the call to action. The currently planned initiatives are not sufficient. We must accelerate,"

Blume said, acknowledging the need for faster adaptation as Chinese rivals increase exports to Europe.

### Seat’s Shrinking Role in the Group

Within the Volkswagen Group, Seat has gradually lost ground to both Skoda and its sister brand Cupra. While Seat remains strong in Spain, where models like the Ibiza, Arona, and Leon regularly top registration charts, its international appeal lags behind Skoda, which has become the group’s leading high-volume brand. Seat’s models are increasingly being absorbed by Cupra, which targets a more premium market and delivers higher profit margins per vehicle.

The Volkswagen Group’s restructuring includes reducing production volume by up to 25 percent and cutting as many as 100,000 jobs globally. As part of this plan, the group is streamlining its brand portfolio, raising questions about Seat’s long-term strategic role.
