A search was under way on Wednesday 14 October after an unidentified person fell into the sea from a catamaran at the entrance to Barcelona’s Port Olímpic. The incident was reported through the 112 emergency number at 20:30, and the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, are investigating both the person’s identity and the cause of the fall.

People at the Port Olímpic entrance and nearby seafront may encounter emergency vessels and responders while the operation continues. Anyone who sees a person in immediate danger should call 112.

## Sea, land and air teams deployed

Maritime Rescue coordinated the response, with land, sea and air units activated after the alert, according to reporting published at 22:48 on Wednesday.

- Two rescue boats were searching the water’s surface.
- A Maritime Rescue helicopter was supporting the operation from the air.
- Land-based emergency teams were also deployed at Port Olímpic.

The person had not been identified when the report was published, and police had not established why they fell from the vessel.

## Rough sea conditions complicate night search

Night-time conditions on Barcelona’s coast were making the search more difficult. [Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat)](https://www.meteo.cat/prediccio/municipal/080193?ref=barna.news), Catalonia’s official weather service, recorded 22°C temperatures and easterly wind at 7 km/h at 20:00 on Wednesday; reporting from the scene said there was a heavy swell.

The catamaran remained at the port facilities while the Mossos d’Esquadra investigation continued.
