The Hospital de Sant Pau has played a key role in shaping the new Care Plan for People with Parkinson's Disease and Atypical Parkinsonisms, a strategic initiative led by the Catalan Department of Health as part of the National Strategy for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The plan sets out a comprehensive roadmap to improve care standards, focusing on accessible, continuous, and equitable support throughout the disease's progression. It aims to go beyond diagnosis by addressing evolving functional, cognitive, and emotional needs, while also recognising the vital role of family members and caregivers.

Over a two-year period, Sant Pau professionals contributed to the development of the document. Those involved include Antònia Campolongo (nurse), Dr Saül Martínez-Horta (neuropsychologist), Elena León (nurse), and Dr Rocio Puig (adjunct physician). They emphasised the importance of anticipatory care that adapts to complex and changing patient needs.

Sant Pau is officially recognised as a national benchmark in movement disorders, with its Functional Unit for Rare Diseases with Movement Disorders accredited as a Centre, Service, and Reference Unit (CSUR) by the Spanish National Health Service [(CSUR 53)](https://www.santpau.cat/en/acreditacions?ref=barna.news). The hospital has been a pioneer in deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease, a technique it has applied for 25 years [(ZonaIT.com)](https://biotech-spain.com/en/articles/sant-pau-initiates-the-second-clinical-trial-on-the-long-term-effects-of-deep-brain-stimulation-dbs-in-patients-with-ultra-resistant-schizophrenia-to-treatment/?ref=barna.news).

Parkinson’s disease affects over 34,000 people in Catalonia, with a prevalence of 4.2 cases per 1,000 inhabitants in 2025\. Atypical parkinsonisms include conditions such as corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, and multiple system atrophy, each with distinct prevalence rates per million.

The new care plan outlines nine strategic lines, detailed in 23 operational projects and 77 specific actions. These cover early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, continuous care, caregiver support, professional training, care area definitions, a regional registry for Parkinson’s and atypical parkinsonisms, and research promotion.

Implementation will be monitored using key indicators, with consideration given to future developments including population ageing, advances in medical knowledge, personalised medicine, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and social robotics.
