## Accreditation for Uveitis and Retina Units

The Uveitis Functional Unit and the Retina team within the Ophthalmology Service at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau have been formally recognised as Clinical Expertise Units (UEC) for rare ophthalmological diseases by the Catalan Health Service, as reported on 5 November 2026\. The accreditation highlights the hospital’s multidisciplinary model in managing complex, low-prevalence eye conditions. Uveitis, an inflammation of the eye’s uveal layer, is often linked to systemic inflammatory disorders, infections, or other ocular diseases, requiring coordinated care across specialties.

## Multidisciplinary Care Model

The Uveitis Functional Unit is jointly coordinated by ophthalmologists Dr Ignacio Vela and Dr Jesús Díaz, and rheumatologist Dr Patricia Moya, reflecting the integrated approach between the Ophthalmology and Rheumatology Services. This structure enables joint consultations and shared decision-making for patients. The Retina team, specialising in conditions such as retinal dystrophies and diabetic retinopathy, includes physicians Dr Marta Caminal, Dr Luciene Collet, Dr Jaume Crespi, Dr Jesús Díaz, Dr Ignacio Salvador, and Dr Ignacio Vela, supported by a team of optometrists.

Both units operate under Sant Pau’s Rare Diseases Program, which uses Functional Units to deliver cross-disciplinary, coordinated care. The programme aims to improve diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management for patients with rare conditions. Further details on the Ophthalmology Service and its specialist teams are available on the [hospital’s official website](https://www.santpau.cat/es/web/public/oft-equip?ref=barna.news).

### What It Means for Patients

Patients across Catalonia with rare eye diseases will now have access to officially accredited expertise at Sant Pau, potentially streamlining referrals and ensuring care meets regional standards for rare disease management.
