## Recall issued over contaminated tahini

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has issued a food alert after traces of *Salmonella spp* were detected in a batch of Pure Sesame Tahini produced by the brand Arkan. The product, imported from Egypt, was distributed in Catalonia, Madrid, and the Basque Country, though authorities say it may have reached other regions through redistribution. The affected product is identified as lot number 0257502493, with a best-before date of December 2027, and is packaged in a 400-gram plastic container. AESAN issued the alert on Sunday 25th October 2026 after being notified via the European Food Alert Network (RASFF) by Maltese health authorities, who first detected the contamination during routine testing.

## Consumers urged not to eat or return product

AESAN is advising anyone who owns this batch to refrain from consuming it and to return it to the point of purchase or dispose of it safely. The agency has coordinated with regional authorities through the Coordinated Rapid Exchange of Information System (SCIRI) to ensure the product is withdrawn from retail channels.

Symptoms of salmonellosis typically appear between 6 and 72 hours after ingestion, most commonly within 12 to 36 hours, and usually last between two and seven days.
