The visitors, from Terrassa, said they were visiting the basilica before joining this afternoon's National Day of Catalonia, or Diada, demonstration in Barcelona. Two demonstration columns are due to leave for Plaça de Catalunya at 17:15, so people travelling through the city centre should expect participants to converge there later today. ## Visitors say flags were retained until they leave Pilar Villa told Tot Barcelona that security staff asked the group to open a bag and removed the flags. She said staff gave the visitors a number linked to their tickets so that the items could be collected when they leave the basilica. > “They made us open our bag during the security check, took it away, and gave us a number, linked to the ticket, so we could pick it up when we leave.” Villa said the group did not challenge staff and that the flags were not being worn or displayed. She questioned why the flags had been removed while another visitor in front of the group was allowed in with an American flag depicted on a waist bag. The group has made a yearly practice of visiting a cultural site before taking part in the Diada demonstration organised by Òmnium Cultural and the ANC, the Catalan National Assembly, which campaigns for independence. In Barcelona, the “present” and “future” columns are due to advance to Plaça de Catalunya from 17:15.
