Josep Maria Soldevila, festival president and director of Sabors Catalans Produccions, described the rumba as an inseparable part of Barcelona’s social fabric. "Barcelona and Catalonia are rumba-loving because they have given us parties and street life," he said during an interview on 'Herrera en COPE Catalunya'. The genre originated in the 1950s in working-class neighbourhoods like Gràcia, Hostafrancs and El Raval, and gained international visibility during the Barcelona ’92 Olympics. ## UNESCO Bid Gains Momentum with International Support The festival coincides with an ongoing campaign to inscribe Catalan rumba on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. According to Soldevila, the candidacy has gained new momentum in the past three years. The Platform for the Defense of Catalan Rumba, supported by the Fundació Sabor de Gràcia, is leading the effort and has recently expanded its bid by including the Association Cap Gély Figuerolles of Montpellier as a co-applicant. This strategic inclusion aims to overcome previous objections from Spain’s Ministry of Culture, which had argued for labelling the music as "Spanish rumba". By presenting the genre as a transnational cultural expression, organisers hope to demonstrate its inclusive, cross-border identity. --- ## Tributes to Rumba Legends and Living Icons The festival’s opening night on 4 September honours Peret, one of rumba’s most influential figures. The festival is part of a wider itinerant campaign across Catalonia, with recent editions held in Berga and other towns. In Berga, the 8–10 August edition included performances by Sabor de Gràcia and La Rumba Blanca, as well as a rumba bingo and communal dinner, reflecting the genre’s deep community roots.
