## Record healthcare training places offered in Girona

Girona will offer 146 eligible specialist healthcare training places in the 2027 national call, according to the Ministry of Health's announcement published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). This marks a record high for the region and an increase of five places from the previous year’s 141\. The allocation includes 104 positions for Medicine (MIR), 33 for Nursing (IIR), four for Pharmacy (FIR), three for Clinical Psychology (PIR), one for Biology (BIR), and one for Hospital Radiotherapy Physics. No Chemistry positions are available. Hospital Trueta in Girona city leads the distribution with 52 eligible places, 46 of which are in Medicine across specialties including Anesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis, Cardiology, and Medical Oncology. The Multiprofessional Teaching Unit for Family and Community Care at the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) will offer 41 places in Family and Community Medicine and Nursing. Other units contribute six places each in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics, two in Occupational Health, and additional placements through regional health providers. Outside the capital, Fundació Salut Empordà in Figueres offers eight places, Serveis de Salut Integrats del Baix Empordà in Palamós has 16, and the Institut d'Assistència Sanitària maintains 15–13 in Mental Health and two linked to midwifery training at Santa Caterina Hospital.

## No exam venue in Girona for second consecutive year

Despite the record number of placements, Girona will not host the national selection exam for the second year running. Candidates must travel to Barcelona, the only exam site in Catalonia. The decision follows the removal of Girona as an examination centre, previously held at the University of Girona. The regional demarcation had been the only alternative to Barcelona within Catalonia.

> Satse, the nursing union, criticised the move, stating it undermines territorial equity and imposes extra burden on local candidates.

The Partit Popular de Catalunya has formally requested in Parliament that Girona be reinstated as an examination venue. The national exam will take place on 23 January 2027 across 26 locations in Spain. It will consist of 200 questions, with ten reserve items, and last four and a half hours.

## Incentives to attract professionals in underserved areas

To encourage placements in hard-to-staff regions, the Department of Health will maintain financial incentives in 2026 and 2027 for Family and Community Medicine and Mental Health Nursing. Aid ranges from €5,516 to €9,929 per resident annually, depending on location, with higher amounts for remote or under-resourced zones. The Catalan government has allocated €13.49 million to support this initiative. Nationwide, the Ministry of Health is offering 12,850 training positions in 2027, an increase of 3.9% (484 more than last year), making it the largest call to date. Since 2018, specialist training capacity has grown by 53% across Spain.
