Last Saturday night's riots in central Barcelona have triggered a political backlash, with opposition parties PP and Junts demanding accountability from President of the Generalitat Salvador Illa and Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni. The disturbances, which unfolded around Plaça de Catalunya on 24th October 2026, resulted in 128 arrests, 14 injured Mossos d'Esquadra officers and damage to 23 shops, according to official figures released by the Mossos and Barcelona City Council.

The unrest began around 6 pm when approximately 600 young people, many wearing hoods and black clothing, gathered for an unauthorised protest promoted on social media under the slogan 'Instituts Indignats', inspired by the French 'Lycéens Indignés' movement. The demonstration quickly turned violent, with participants vandalising street furniture, setting fire to bins, throwing stones at police, and looting shops. Train services at Plaça Catalunya station were temporarily suspended, and access to the square was restricted by the Guardia Urbana.

More than half of those arrested, 72 individuals, were under 18 years old, and only two had prior records for public disorder, according to a Sunday statement from the Mossos d'Esquadra. Officers also seized bladed weapons, sprays, balaclavas and fireworks, with 68 administrative records opened for confiscated items. Firefighters carried out 33 interventions to extinguish fires across the area.

## Opposition Blames Leadership Failures

Daniel Sirera, PP group leader at Barcelona City Council, accused Collboni of failing to warn shopkeepers and residents despite having advance knowledge of potential disturbances. Speaking at a press conference in Plaça Catalunya on Monday 26th October, Sirera demanded that both Illa and Collboni assume political responsibility.

> What is the point of having a City Council if, when disturbances are foreseen, it looks the other way and does not warn those who are going to suffer them?

The PP will bring a motion to Friday's municipal plenary session calling for Collboni's government to explain the police operation's shortcomings and why businesses were not pre-emptively alerted. The party also demands the City Council act as a private prosecutor in legal proceedings against those responsible for damages.

Xavier García Albiol, PP's candidate for Barcelona in the upcoming general elections, criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for remaining silent on the incident, accusing him of 'absolute contempt' towards affected residents. Albiol rejected the idea that the violence was spontaneous, instead describing it as 'the consequence of an organization to commit crimes and to wreck the city of Barcelona', and linked it to broader issues of integration among second-generation immigrant communities.

## Junts Sets 48-Hour Deadline for Answers

Junts has also escalated pressure, with Congress spokesperson Miriam Nogueras giving the Generalitat and City Council 48 hours to disclose what intelligence they held ahead of the riots and what preventive measures were taken.

> There must be responsibilities and dismissals if it is confirmed that they had all the information and the job was not done.

Nogueras stated that calls for unrest had circulated online for days, suggesting the events were foreseeable. She will scrutinise the Interior Ministry's actions when Minister Núria Parlon appears before a parliamentary commission on Wednesday 28th October. Junts is calling for more Mossos officers, stronger prevention protocols, and legislative reforms to combat what it describes as 'serious vandalism'.

The party also demands urgent financial aid and legal support for affected businesses, as well as a full assessment of damages. Collboni has confirmed the city will pursue legal action to hold perpetrators accountable, including potential consequences for parents of minors involved.
