## Sharp Drop in Temperatures Across the City

A mass of polar air has arrived in Barcelona, marking a sudden shift to autumn weather after weeks of unseasonable heat. Minimum temperatures in some districts, particularly in elevated areas such as Horta and El Carmel, are expected to drop below 10°C in the early morning hours on Friday, 9 October 2026\. The cold air, detached from the Arctic and driven south by a trough, has already brought the first snowfalls to the Pyrenees and is affecting much of the Iberian Peninsula. In Barcelona, the drop represents a fall of more than six degrees compared to recent highs.

## Daytime Temperatures Struggle to Rise

During the day, maximum temperatures on Friday will struggle to exceed 20°C in central areas. In neighbourhoods closer to the Serra de Collserola, highs will not surpass 18°C, according to forecasts from Meteocat, the Catalan Meteorological Service. Residents are advised to dress warmly for early mornings, with jackets and sweaters recommended even along the coast. While daytime conditions will be cool to mild, the contrast between morning and afternoon temperatures will be pronounced.

## Sunny Skies Return After Recent Rain

Despite the chill, the coming days will see predominantly clear skies and stable weather. The persistent rain that delivered up to 900 litres per square metre in some areas, with totals potentially exceeding 1,000 l/m² by year-end, has subsided. Meteocat has deactivated most weather alerts, with only residual warnings for strong winds and rough seas in far-northeastern coastal zones now lifted. The return of anticyclonic conditions means dry, sunny weather will dominate for several days.

## Short-Lived Cool Spell

The cold snap is expected to be brief. Temperatures will begin rising again on Saturday, with highs approaching 25°C by Sunday. This return to milder conditions will bring back the familiar Mediterranean pattern of cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. Longer-term models suggest that wetter trends will persist along the eastern coast of Spain, with the Catalan coastline, including Barcelona, likely to face further convective rainfall episodes due to elevated sea temperatures in the western Mediterranean.
