## Experts and Public Unite Against Marine Waste

The Plogging Congress returns to Port Olímpic on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October 2026, uniting institutions, scientists, environmental groups, and the public to address marine pollution in the Mediterranean. Organised by Fundació Climent Guitart in alliance with BSM, the municipal company managing the port, the event runs under the slogan "Everything ends up in the sea. What can we do to prevent it?" and focuses on how urban waste travels to the sea and what actions can stop it. Friday’s programme at Sala Mestral will feature debates on waste prevention, water management, innovation, and the circular economy, with input from environmental and scientific organisations. The aim is to turn awareness into practical solutions before waste reaches the coastline.

## Citizen Action and Education on Saturday

On Saturday 17 October, members of the public are invited to join Plogging Day at Nova Icària beach. The clean-up, running from 10:00 to 11:30, requires prior registration and is carried out in collaboration with Aigües de Barcelona. Diving professionals and members of the Centre Municipal de Vela (CMV) will conduct an underwater waste collection.

> Participants will receive all necessary materials from the organisers to collect litter safely and effectively.

Following the clean-up, from 11:30 to 12:30, educational activities will take place at Moll de Mestral. These include workshops on coastal biodiversity, ocean acidification experiments, and microplastic investigations. The Zoo de Barcelona, Anèl·lides, and CMV will lead interactive sessions, while illustrator Pilarín Bayés hosts a drawing workshop for families.

## A Growing Movement for the Mediterranean

Launched in Lloret de Mar in 2022, the Plogging Congress has mobilised over 8,000 participants and connected 13 countries. Last year’s edition in Barcelona removed nearly 170 kilograms of waste from local beaches. The event reinforces Port Olímpic’s role as a hub for sustainability and the blue economy, backed by partners including Ajuntament de Barcelona, Damm, FECDAS, and Sorigué. The congress exemplifies the city’s ongoing commitment to marine biodiversity and coastal resilience, combining science, sport, and civic action to protect the Mediterranean.
