## Four-City Festival Explores Evolution of the Image

The Panoràmic festival, marking its tenth edition, is commemorating the 200th anniversary of photography with a sprawling cultural programme across Granollers, Vic, Barcelona and Terrassa. Running from 15 October to 27 December 2026, the festival presents 25 exhibitions and nearly 50 activities, including conferences, guided tours and audiovisual performances, aimed at the general public, children through Panoràmic Infants, and professionals via Panoràmic PRO.

The festival began with a staggered rollout: opening in Granollers on 15 October, followed by Vic on 17 October, the first time the city has participated, Barcelona on 22 October, and Terrassa on 5 November. Organised under the theme "Burning with Desire", the event uses the bicentennial of Nicéphore Niépce’s first preserved photograph as a springboard to examine how visual culture has evolved in an age of artificial intelligence and social media.

## Major Exhibitions and International Artists

In Granollers, American documentary photographer Donna Ferrato presents *Holy*, a powerful body of work exposing gender-based violence while affirming women’s agency and sexual freedom. Japanese artist Kensuke Koike debuts his solo exhibition *A Familiar Stranger* in Spain, transforming vintage photographs through precise cuts and folds without adding external elements. British artist Leah Gordon also presents her first solo show in Spain, *Monument to the Vanquished Peasant*, exploring colonial memory and resistance in Haiti and the UK.

The festival revives the work of Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý, who crafted homemade cameras from discarded materials to produce dreamlike, painterly images. His retrospective coincides with the centenary of his birth.

Technological and experimental works feature prominently. Playmodes studio presents *Spin*, an immersive light installation at La Tèrmica in Roca Umbert, Granollers. Anna Rierola’s *El jardín de las delicias* converts biomedical data into visual mosaics, while Josep Poblet creates a light-based architectural intervention at the site of a medieval tannery in Granollers.

## Barcelona as Intellectual Hub

In Barcelona, exhibitions unfold across key cultural institutions. Domènec’s *Refugi* is on view at the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, Nathalie Rey’s *Impressions d'ultramar* at the Casa de l'Ardiaca, and Marina Planas’s *Cossos d'aigua* at the Museu Marítim. Additional shows appear at l'Arxiu d'Etnografia i Folklore, l'Arxiu Fotogràfic, and Fundació Lluís Coromina.

The city also hosts the International Fotoescriptures Encounter at the CCCB, exploring intersections between literature and photography. Panoràmic PRO brings together over 60 international and local professionals for workshops and the first Conference on the History of Photography, co-organised by Foto Colectania and Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

> The festival is not about petrifying history in a museum, but about placing the image at the centre of the present debate.

### Live Events and Critical Debates

- Francesca da Rimini and Virginia Barratt, co-founders of the cyberfeminist collective VNS Matrix, make their first visit to Spain with a performative lecture at MACBA.
- Experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison headlines a session at Zumzeig cinema, screening works that reflect on the decay of celluloid film.
- Lebanese visual artist Randa Mirza and Egyptian composer Aya Metwalli present a sound and visual performance in Granollers, based on collections from the Arab Image Foundation.
- Lectures by Julie Jones, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, and historian Geoffrey Batchen deepen theoretical discussions on image culture.

A new publication, *Panoràmic. Una dècada de cultura visual*, was launched on 29 October at the CCCB. It features essays by Andrés Hispano, Mercè Alsina, Joan Fontcuberta and others, analysing shifts in visual culture around memory, identity and post-truth in the AI era.
