Sílvia Paneque, Catalonia’s minister for Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, has said there are no common elements between the sinkhole linked to L9 metro works in Barcelona’s Putxet neighbourhood and the collapse during Rodalies commuter rail works in Montcada i Reixac.

For residents affected by the Putxet incident and commuters using Rodalies services, the distinction means the two events are being treated as separate cases. On 27 July, Paneque said responsibility for the Montcada i Reixac sinkhole should not be assigned until the relevant report is complete, according to Europa Press.

## Putxet sinkhole affected 93 flats

The Putxet sinkhole occurred on 7 July near L9 works in Sant Gervasi - la Bonanova. It measured eight metres across and four metres deep, according to ARA.

Eight buildings on Rubinstein, Teodora Lamadrid and Sant Gervasi de Cassoles streets were evacuated. The evacuation affected 93 flats, while the emergency and crisis centre attended 85 people that day.

> “An abnormally high” increase in vertical movement was detected by sensors, which recorded displacements of four millimetres.

Paneque said the sensors detected the movement between 7am and 8am, prompting an inspection by technicians and firefighters. No injuries were reported.

## Early indication points to a cavity at L9 works

In comments reported after the Putxet collapse, Paneque said the first indications pointed to insufficient concrete having been used to fill a cavity created as the tunnel-boring machine progressed near the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya El Putxet station.

The Montcada i Reixac incident occurred on 22 July during work to place the Rodalies railway line underground. Paneque has called for the report into that sinkhole before responsibility is determined.
