## Theft of Critical Rescue Equipment

More than €40,000 worth of rescue equipment has been stolen from the Montjuïc fire station in Barcelona, with the latest break-in occurring in the early hours of Friday 16 October 2026\. The theft was discovered by on-duty firefighters who encountered unknown individuals rummaging through lockers, according to Pablo Ramírez, general secretary of the UGT union at the Barcelona City Council. The stolen items include hydraulic de-trapping tools used to free people from vehicles during traffic accidents, which are both expensive and potentially dangerous if misused for criminal activities such as ATM break-ins. The equipment is essential for emergency responses to building collapses, traffic collisions, and other life-threatening incidents.

## Union Demands Security Overhaul

UGT has called on the Barcelona City Council to urgently reinforce security at all fire stations, citing three break-ins at the Montjuïc facility in the past two months. In addition to the loss of public equipment, firefighters’ personal belongings have been stolen and vehicles and infrastructure damaged. The union is demanding immediate installation of security cameras, reinforced doors and fencing, and an urgent meeting with municipal authorities to establish a clear timeline for improvements. Ramírez stressed that firefighters should not be expected to act as security guards, especially during night shifts or when crews are deployed on emergencies.

> Firefighters are at the station to respond to emergencies, not to act as security guards for the facilities or to compensate for the deficiencies in the security systems.

### Broader Security Concerns

The union warns that the issue extends beyond Montjuïc, with the Mossos d'Esquadra investigating five similar thefts at Generalitat-run fire stations in Granollers, Tarragona, Cerdanyola, and Vic since March 2026\. The regional police force has opened an investigation into the latest theft. While the Ajuntament de Barcelona is currently developing a Local Security Plan 2024–2027 that includes 300 measures to improve public safety and coexistence, the plan does not yet address specific security upgrades for fire stations. The plan aims to reduce victim numbers, anticipate conflict, and improve public perception of security through enhanced institutional coordination and prevention strategies.
