Forty-four producers and cooperatives of olive oil and honey are demanding that Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni honour commitments to hold the second edition of the Mercat de l’Oli Nou in Plaça de Catalunya on 20th, 21st, and 22nd November 2026\. The event, promoted by PRODECA, the Catalan government’s agency for Catalan food promotion, was initially scheduled for this location, which producers say is vital for visibility and footfall.

The group opposes the City Council’s proposal to relocate the market to Plaça de les Glòries, citing concerns over accessibility and reduced public exposure. According to a joint letter sent to Mayor Collboni, President of the Generalitat Salvador Illa, and the Minister of Agriculture, the change, announced just weeks before the event, threatens the viability of their preparations, which began in June 2026\. The producers argue that Plaça de Catalunya’s central location is a “determining factor” for promoting local produce, a condition they say Glòries cannot replicate.

## Alternative Suggested: Passeig de Gràcia

If the Plaça de Catalunya site remains unavailable due to ongoing occupation, the sector proposes moving the event to Passeig de Gràcia as the only suitable alternative. As an additional solution, they have formally requested a postponement to 18th, 19th, and 20th December 2026, to allow time for proper reorganisation.

> We are not asking for any special favors, but rather for the commitments made to be respected and for the consequences of circumstances beyond our control not to fall upon the producer sector.

The appeal calls on institutions to move beyond “institutional declarations” and demonstrate real support for local agriculture through concrete actions, including securing dignified public spaces for direct sales and tastings. The first edition of the market, held in November 2025, took place in Plaça de Catalunya and featured around 50 producers from 21 Catalan comarcas, offering fresh-pressed olive oil, seasonal Catalan cuisine, and live tasting sessions, according to PRODECA.

## Glòries Already Hosts Major Events

Plaça de les Glòries has recently been remodelled and is set to host the 14th Market of Markets Fair from 17th to 19th October 2026, as part of Catalonia’s designation as the 2025 World Region of Gastronomy. The site, located near the Torre Glòries (formerly Torre Agbar), is a key urban hub but lacks the same pedestrian traffic and symbolic centrality as Plaça de Catalunya, producers argue.

The Mercat de l’Oli Nou is part of a broader effort by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat to strengthen the connection between Catalan producers and urban consumers. Official details about the event are published on the PRODECA website and the dedicated event portal [mercatolinou.cat](https://www.mercatolinou.cat/?ref=barna.news).
