## Storms Leave Nine Dead and Widespread Damage

Over the past two months, a series of intense storms has struck Catalonia, resulting in nine confirmed deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure, homes and transport networks. The most recent fatalities occurred during a severe weather event on 3rd and 4th October, bringing the total death toll to nine since late August.

The storms began in mid-August, shortly after the region recovered from summer wildfires. Since then, ten distinct storm episodes have affected various parts of Catalonia, with particularly severe impacts in the southern coastal areas, the Barcelona metropolitan region, and the northern counties of Vallès Oriental and Maresme.

## Timeline of Key Storm Events

- **21–22 August:** Torrential rains of up to 140 litres per square metre caused severe urban flooding between Torredembarra and El Vendrell. A mother and daughter died in Roda de Berà when a wall collapsed during a cancelled craft fair. Another person died in El Vendrell after their car was swept away by a swollen stream.
- **24 August:** Up to 90 litres per square metre fell in three hours in Tarragona, causing street flooding and tree collapses. Emergency services conducted multiple rescues.
- **15–16 September:** Nearly 60 litres per square metre in 30 minutes hit Garraf, affecting Barcelona and the mouth of the Besòs river.
- **28–29 September:** Heavy rainfall of 50 litres per square metre in 30 minutes disrupted mobility across the Barcelona metropolitan area. The Besòs river rose significantly, submerging its river park.
- **1–2 October:** Coastal areas of Terres de l’Ebre and southern Tarragona recorded up to 250 litres per square metre. Residents were confined, and interurban movement was restricted.
- **3–4 October:** Exceptional rainfall of 250 litres per square metre in Vallès Oriental and Maresme triggered widespread flooding. Five people died, two in Maresme, three in Vallès Oriental. The Besòs river overflowed, and 6,000 emergency incidents were reported.
- **5 October:** Granollers recorded 100 litres per square metre in two hours, causing sinkholes and structural damage. The cumulative effect of prior rains worsened conditions.
- **17–18 October:** A 35-year-old woman died in Cabrera de Mar after attempting to cross a flooded stream during a storm that delivered 60 litres per square metre in 30 minutes.

## Emergency Response and Ongoing Risks

On 4th October, the Generalitat government activated emergency protocols across 20 counties. The R1 and R11 Rodalies train lines remained out of service on Monday 5th October due to flood damage. The Ajuntament de Granollers announced a €4 million fund to address storm impacts, citing exceptional rainfall levels that overwhelmed drainage systems.

> The president confirmed that the alerts active in Alt and Baix Empordà due to the storm were being lifted by 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Despite the easing of weather conditions, authorities warned of residual risks, including unstable ground, contaminated water and potential further flash flooding in already saturated areas. The Generalitat Fire Department conducted over 200 rescue operations during the peak of the storms.

Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat, visited Montornès del Vallès on Sunday 4th October to assess damage and meet with the family of one of the victims. He reiterated calls for caution near rivers and streams, particularly in rural and coastal municipalities.
