## Front Marítim Nightclubs Must Stay, Says Zapata

Carmen Zapata, Barcelona's first night mayor, has completed two years in office this October and remains firm in her support for the city’s established nightlife areas. In an interview with Metrópoli Abierta, she argued it would be a mistake to relocate the nightclubs on the Front Marítim, stating there is no viable alternative site in the city capable of hosting venues of similar scale. The five clubs, whose operating licences are tied to state-owned properties managed by the Ministry of Finance, face uncertainty as their current concessions expire in 2027\. While the city council, under mayor Jaume Collboni, rejected a motion in May to demand the central government not renew these concessions, Zapata stressed the decision ultimately lies beyond municipal control. "For me, it would be a mistake to move them; they are where they could best be," she said.

> “Managing nighttime hours goes far beyond partying: there are many workers who live by night and the city must be prepared for this,”

## 500 Homes Planned Near Maria Cristina

Zapata also highlighted a key initiative from her office: the planned construction of 500 public housing units around Avenida Maria Cristina, integrated into the broader urban redevelopment of the Montjuïc fairgrounds. According to the Barcelona City Council, this project forms part of the Special Urban Development and Urban Improvement Plan approved by the Government Commission, which also includes 48 special-purpose homes, new local facilities and over 6,800 m² of green spaces. The project, with a planned budget of over 90 million euros, is set to begin construction in 2029 and be completed by 2033\. Urban planning studies are currently underway to incorporate noise mitigation measures such as soundproofing, inward-facing bedroom layouts and facade insulation to protect residents from nearby cultural activities.

## Noise Control and Night Mediation

Zapata welcomed city measures including the ban on pub crawls and the planned tripling of night mediation agents by 2027\. She acknowledged the growing trend of "tardeo", afternoon drinking, as complementary to nightlife but warned of potential impacts on live music venues if licensing is not reviewed. Her office continues to balance the needs of residents, workers and cultural operators across the city’s 24-hour economy.
