# Nearly 20 Arrested in Diada Clashes

## Clashes Follow Blocked Far-Right Rally

Police arrested nearly 20 people, including 10 minors, during violent disturbances in Barcelona on Friday evening amid counter-protests against a far-right gathering. The events unfolded after around 3,000 anti-fascist demonstrators, mostly from the independentist left, prevented the far-right group Núcleo Nacional from holding a rally at Plaça Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer. The group had planned to hold their event in the square, which they referred to by its Spanish name in promotional materials. Instead, around 80 supporters were forced to gather on Mallorca Street, about 100 metres away, under police escort.

## Police Contain Violence After Rally Ends

Anti-fascist protesters bypassed several police checkpoints to occupy the square before the scheduled event. They were stopped by a cordon of riot police from the Mossos d'Esquadra’s Mobile Brigade, who came under intermittent attack from stones, bottles, and paint cans. About 20 police vans were deployed to separate the opposing groups. After the far-right group left the area, escorted by officers to a nearby car park, the anti-fascist procession began moving towards Passeig de Sant Joan. At that point, police launched charges in response to further object-throwing.

One woman was injured during the police push, according to eyewitness reports. Protesters responded with bottles, stones, and firecrackers, but riot officers focused on containment rather than pursuit.
