# Mossos Deploy to Block Siege of Layetana Police HQ

## Violence erupts after peaceful march

A demonstration called by the ANC to mark the ninth anniversary of October 1st began peacefully in Plaça Urquinaona at around 7:30 PM on Thursday. However, nearly an hour later, a group of hooded individuals began launching fireworks, eggs and smoke bombs at Mossos d'Esquadra officers guarding the National Police Headquarters on Via Laietana. The regional police issued multiple loudspeaker warnings urging the group to stop their actions. When the demonstrators overturned several waste containers and set them on fire, the Mossos moved in to disperse them.

## No defensive measures used, say Mossos

According to the Mossos d'Esquadra, the intervention was carried out without use of defensive force. The charge aimed to clear violent protesters so firefighters could extinguish the burning containers. Incidents continued later in the evening, with six containers set ablaze across Plaça Urquinaona, Ronda Sant Pere and Pau Claris with Casp streets, locations within a 5- to 10-minute walk from the police building.

Via Laietana has long been a focal point for unrest following rulings related to the 2017 independence process. The current events unfolded hours before the continuation of the trial concerning the blinding of Roger Español during the 2017 referendum, where expert testimony indicated the officer who fired was 14.12 metres from the victim, closer than the 15-metre minimum recommended distance for rubber bullet shotguns.
