## Crusellas Revives a Barcelona Institution

Chocolatier Lluc Crusellas has taken over Xocolates Fargas, the historic chocolate shop at 16 Carrer de Pi in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, founded in 1827\. The 2021 World Chocolate Master, originally from Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer, will preserve the shop’s name and signature products as part of a carefully managed transition. The shop is set to reopen under its new leadership this Thursday afternoon, just before the start of the Christmas season and on the cusp of its 200th anniversary in 2027.

## Continuity and Change

Crusellas confirmed that the current shop employee will remain in place, while Genís Vilarmau, a pastry chef from Santa Maria de Merlès who worked with him for six years, will oversee workshop operations. Vilarmau replaces the former workshop employee, who has taken early retirement. The new team will continue producing Fargas’s iconic items, including stone-ground chocolate using the original mill, frozen truffles, cat-tongue biscuits, and chocolate bars with coffee and salt.

> "It was very nice to be able to follow the legacy of the history of chocolate making in Barcelona. I am very grateful to the sector for what it has given me over the years and I want to give it back,"

Crusellas said, emphasising his commitment to local craftsmanship and regional collaboration. He also noted that some products from his Eukarya brand in Vic, such as animal-shaped 'monas' and Dubai chocolate made with real pistachios, will now be available in Barcelona.

## New Offerings and Sensory Experience

The updated Fargas will introduce hot chocolate to go, served with ladyfingers, a deliberate choice over churros for their Catalan identity and to avoid the smell of frying oil in the narrow streets. Cocoa will be roasted on-site, enhancing the sensory experience of the area, which already includes nearby institutions like Granja Pallaresa and Dulcinea. Crusellas also plans to sell chocolate-coated nuts and may bring Fargas’s stone-ground chocolate back to his shop in Vic. Minimal changes have been made so far, limited to painting, with a more extensive renovation planned after the Christmas season, respecting the building’s protected status.

### What It Means for Visitors

The relaunch offers locals and tourists a chance to experience a revitalised landmark in one of Barcelona’s most visited neighbourhoods. The shop’s reopening this Thursday afternoon marks the start of a new chapter for a business that has long been a fixture in the city’s culinary heritage.
