## Decision Reversed After Public Campaign

The Barcelona Library Consortium has confirmed that the new library in Besòs i el Maresme will keep the name Biblioteca del Besòs i el Maresme-Ramon d’Alòs-Moner. This follows a reversal of an earlier plan to rename it after writer Ana María Matute, a move that sparked backlash from cultural and professional groups. Ferran Burguillos, manager of the Barcelona Library Consortium, confirmed the decision to TOT Barcelona on Saturday 12 September 2026\. The new facility, set to open in the first quarter of 2027, will be located at Carrer d’Alfons el Magnànim, 59, on the site of the former Pere IV cinema.

## Widespread Opposition to Name Change

The push to retain the Alòs-Moner name was led by the Maresme Neighborhood Association, the Official College of Librarians-Documentalists of Catalonia (COBDC), and political party ERC. The COBDC sent a formal letter to Barcelona City Council, responsible for 70% of the Consortium’s funding, citing Alòs-Moner’s foundational role in Catalan library science and public access to books.

> We have sent a letter to the Barcelona City Council defending the historical and professional value of Alòs-Moner and his library legacy.

Ramon d’Alòs-Moner, a scholar, librarian, and cultural historian, was instrumental in the modernisation of Catalonia’s library system. He was the first assistant at the Library of Catalonia, a professor at the School of Librarians, and a key organiser of the First International Congress of the Catalan Language in 1906\. The library was originally named in his honour in January 1970, during the waning years of the Franco dictatorship, as a symbolic act of cultural resistance.

### New Building, Expanded Facilities

The new 5,200-square-metre building will house the library across the mezzanine and first three floors, occupying approximately 2,400 m². The expansion of CAP Besòs will take up around 3,000 m² over the top three floors, doubling its current size, with a connecting walkway to the existing health centre. A basement auditorium of over 500 m² will host community events. The project, first announced in October 2023, has an approved budget exceeding €15.2 million, funded through a collaboration between Barcelona City Council and the Department of Health of the Generalitat. Construction began after the demolition of the old cinema, with completion initially projected for May 2026, though the library will open in early 2027\. The library currently operates at Rambla de Prim, 87-89, within the Besòs civic centre, a location it has held since 1994\. It first opened in 1970 at Plaça de la Mare Nazaria March.
