Lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals face more than double the risk of attempting suicide compared to heterosexual people, according to a major new global study led by the Bipolar and Depressive Disorders research group at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and IDIBAPS. The research, published in *World Psychiatry*, also confirms higher rates of depression and anxiety within the LGBTQIA+ community.

The study, described by its lead author Vincenzo Oliva as one of the 'most solid and reliable' to date, analysed 398 studies involving approximately 12 million people worldwide, including nearly half a million from the LGBTQIA+ community. It found lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals are about twice as likely to experience depression and 2.5 times more likely to attempt suicide in a given year than their heterosexual peers.

Further findings reveal disparities within the community itself. Bisexual individuals showed higher levels of anxiety and non-suicidal self-harm compared to lesbians and gay men. Gay teenage boys were also found to engage more frequently in purging behaviours than their heterosexual counterparts.

## Call for Better Mental Health Support

> We need professionals to pay attention to these risks and act early, especially during adolescence, when some of these symptoms first appear.

, Vincenzo Oliva, lead author, Hospital Clínic

Eduard Vieta, head of the research group at IDIBAPS and director of the Clínic’s Neuroscience Institute, called the study 'the largest ever conducted historically on the collective mental health' of LGBTQIA+ individuals. He stressed the need for inclusive prevention strategies, early detection and improved access to psychiatric care.

The research examined four key areas: presence of mental disorders, symptoms, suicidal behaviours and self-harm, and access to mental health services. Despite progress in awareness, Vieta warned that current mental health budgets are 'below last year's spending', limiting the scope of intervention programmes.

### Barcelona Seen as 'Bubble Within a Bubble'

Dr Giovanna Fico, a psychiatrist at the Clínic and researcher at IDIBAPS, described Barcelona as a 'bubble within a bubble', noting that while services like the city’s Transit Unit for gender identity care function well, significant inequalities persist across Europe and globally. She called for better training for healthcare professionals to prevent negative experiences in care settings.

The study highlights a geographic imbalance in data, with most research originating from North America and Europe. Both Oliva and Vieta urged for more region-specific research, particularly in underrepresented areas, to ensure findings are applicable across diverse populations.
