## Community Push to Save Vallcarca's La Riera

The future of La Riera, a cultural bar and former winery at 81 Avinguda de Vallcarca, hangs in the balance as its collective seeks €170,000 to purchase the building and block a long-standing urban development plan. Since 2011, the space has been managed by the Associació de Festes Majors Alternatives de Vallcarca (AFMAV) and, later, a worker cooperative. It hosts live music and community events in a neighbourhood under pressure from redevelopment plans revived by Barcelona City Council. The lease on the premises expired on 30 September 2026\. With the owners unwilling to renew, AFMAV entered into an agreement to acquire the property, set for completion in January 2027, provided the funds are raised.

## "A Step Forward" Against Displacement

> Our tendency is to always be on the defensive. We have few opportunities to build and project ourselves, to see a long-term horizon.

The purchase is seen as a way to resist the so-called Grey Rambla project, a redevelopment plan critics say relies on displacement and demolition. Ownership would give the collective legal standing to oppose demolition and secure the space as "Vallcarca's community heritage." Funding will come primarily through solidarity loans of €1,000 each, repayable five years after acquisition. Around 30 loans have already been secured. The model aims to broaden community ownership while ensuring financial sustainability.

### Next Steps and Community Support

AFMAV will establish the "Amigues de La Riera" (Friends of La Riera) network to build long-term social support independent of the loan campaign. Legal ownership will remain with AFMAV, while day-to-day operations continue under the worker cooperative. The campaign represents a rare chance for a grassroots cultural space to transition from rental insecurity to permanent community control, a move organisers hope will shift the power dynamic in Vallcarca’s urban future.
