## Overhaul backed by traders and city to restore market’s character

The Mercat de la Boqueria in central Barcelona will undergo a comprehensive €12 million renovation starting next summer, aiming to reverse years of overtourism and re-establish its role as a local food market. The project, confirmed by the Institut Municipal de Mercats de Barcelona (IMMB), follows approval from over 90% of members of the Administrativa de Venedors traders’ association. Work is scheduled to begin after summer 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2027\. The overhaul will target structural and environmental upgrades, including the renewal of toilets, air-conditioning systems, administrative offices, and the façade facing Plaça de Gardunya.

## Design and circulation improvements

A central aisle will be opened up to improve ventilation and customer flow, while accessibility across the market will be enhanced. The fish section, one of the most iconic areas within the market, will be completely rebuilt. The fibrocement roof will be replaced with solar panelling as part of the city’s strategy to make municipal markets more energy self-sufficient, reducing both energy consumption and emissions.

## New rules to prioritise fresh, traditional produce

Under new regulations jointly developed by the city and traders, at least 54% of the market’s 1,494 square metres of retail space will be reserved for traditional fresh products, including fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, and charcuterie. Pre-prepared foods such as juices, kebabs, and takeaway paellas will be limited to no more than 50% of total offerings.

> We were aware of the traders’ desire to not only invest in the physical market but also to recover its citizen and Barcelona spirit.

Raquel Gil, deputy mayor for Economic Promotion, said the reform formalises the kind of market Barcelona wants. “We have put black on white what kind of market we want,” she said, noting the strong trader support as key to moving forward. The changes aim to preserve the market’s unique food identity while adapting to modern consumption habits, ensuring it remains a functional space for residents as well as visitors.

Local residents have long expressed frustration over overcrowding and the proliferation of souvenir stands and snack counters catering to tourists. The reforms are designed to address these concerns by reinforcing La Boqueria’s role as a community food hub.
