## Expulsion from priesthood and order confirmed

The Society of Jesus has expelled Francesc Josep Peris Boixeda, 84, from both the clerical state and the religious order following a canonical penal process that found him guilty of sexual abuse of minors. The decision, announced on 5 October 2026, means Peris can no longer function as a priest or member of the Jesuits. The canonical process concluded that Peris committed multiple violations of the sixth commandment of the Decalogue, sexual abuse, against minors dating back to at least the 1970s. The acts occurred at the Jesuit school Casp in Barcelona and the Juan XXIII school in Cochabamba, Bolivia, where Peris was stationed from 1982.

## Canonical penalties and institutional accountability

The expulsion from the clerical state, the most severe penalty under canon law for such crimes, was issued by delegation from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican. Separately, Superior General Arturo Sosa decreed Peris’s expulsion from the Society of Jesus, a distinct canonical measure affecting his membership in the religious order. These sanctions do not constitute excommunication but remove all rights and functions tied to the priesthood and Jesuit brotherhood. Peris has been informed of both rulings and retains the right to appeal under canon law.

> We deeply regret the harm caused and assume our moral and institutional responsibility for our past mistakes.

The Society of Jesus acknowledged in a public statement that the sanctions do not repair the harm done and admitted to serious failures in how it responded to victims. It expressed regret for not adequately listening to, protecting, or supporting those who reported abuse and thanked survivors for their courage in coming forward.

## Residence under supervision

Despite the expulsion, Peris will remain in a Jesuit community under strict conditions agreed upon with the order. He accepted a supervision arrangement that includes prohibitions on contact with minors or vulnerable adults, leaving the residence without permission, communicating with victims, or receiving visitors without authorisation. The Jesuits stressed that this living arrangement does not diminish the penalties imposed. The decision aims to balance canonical consequences with ongoing pastoral responsibility for an elderly individual requiring care.

The Society reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, cooperation with justice, and the protection of minors. It pledged to continue strengthening prevention mechanisms and providing comprehensive support, emotional, psychological, and spiritual, to victims.
