## Deal to Reshape Barcelona's Southern Entrance

The Catalan government is set to sign an agreement today, Friday 16 October 2026, to purchase the Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia (RACC) headquarters and adjacent offices on Avinguda Diagonal, a key step in advancing the Clínic-UB Health Campus project. The acquisition, confirmed by [en.ara.cat](https://en.ara.cat/society/the-government-buys-from-the-racc-the-offices-the-diagonal-for-the-future-clinic-campus%5F1%5F5880574.html?ref=barna.news), will clear land for a major urban redevelopment at the southern entrance to Barcelona. The two properties, the main RACC building at the corner of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Albert Bastardas, inaugurated in 1996, and a second office block opened in 2003, are located within the designated area of the future Campus Clínic. Under the preliminary Urban Development Master Plan (PDU), this zone will host healthcare, educational, and research facilities, along with green corridors and improved public transport links.

## £70–80 Million Purchase Secures Key Site

Although the official price has not yet been disclosed, sources familiar with the agreement told ARA that the transaction will fall between £70 million and £80 million. This marks the second major land acquisition for the project, following the government’s £135.25 million purchase of University of Barcelona (UB) land in the same area. The move was announced after the RACC held an extraordinary general assembly on Wednesday, where members were informed that negotiations with the Catalan government had concluded successfully. The government described the deal as a "new advance" in the strategic transformation of the area into an international hub for healthcare, research, and education.

## Phased Relocation Allows Time for Transition

Despite the imminent signing, the RACC will continue to occupy its current offices, at least the main building, until at least 2030\. This allows time for the organisation to plan its relocation and for the government to prepare for demolition, which will also affect an adjacent petrol station. RACC sources said the company has only just begun assessing potential new locations. Earlier speculation about a move to the DFactory complex in the Zona Franca was internally dismissed.

## Urban Vision: Health, Housing, and Connectivity

The Clínic-UB Health Campus will span 12.7 hectares across Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Esplugues de Llobregat, transforming nearly 70 hectares of urban space. The approved PDU allocates at least 63% of total floor area to healthcare, teaching, and research, around 23% to economic activity, up to 10% to housing, and 4% to local facilities. A key feature is the new UB Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences in Esplugues, expected to open in the 2032–2033 academic year with capacity for 3,000 students. The plan also includes 1,125 homes, half of which will be officially protected, with most located in L’Hospitalet. Transport upgrades include a new L3 metro station, pedestrian and cycle priority, and the undergrounding of the Collblanc electrical substation to free up land. The redesign of the junction between Avinguda Diagonal and Ronda de Dalt aims to improve inter-municipal connectivity. Residents can attend public information sessions hosted by the Barcelona City Council to learn more about the PDU, which is currently in its public consultation phase. > The project represents a strategic transformation of a key metropolitan gateway, balancing health infrastructure with housing and sustainable mobility.
