## Forn Gil Steps In to Save Poblenou Institution

The Cruixent bakery at 173 Pujades Street in Poblenou, which closed on 31 July 2026 after 14 years in the neighbourhood, will reopen under new ownership. Forns Gil, a family-run bakery business with four existing outlets in Barcelona, has acquired the premises and plans to relaunch the site as an artisan bakery in early October. Gerard Gil, representing the fourth generation of the family, confirmed the move in a post on the business's Instagram account, where it has nearly 13,000 followers. The Gil family's baking lineage dates back to 1891 in Reus, and their first Barcelona shop opened in Sant Andreu in the 1950s. Their most prominent location is at 263 Navas de Tolosa Street in Clot, established in 1971.

## A Mission to Preserve Local Craft

The decision to take over the Cruixent space came quickly after the Gils learned of its closure, driven by a desire to protect neighbourhood commerce. "We were either going to do it, or a large chain would," Gerard Gil said, adding that it was a matter of pride to keep an artisan bakery alive in the area. "It makes us sad when businesses like this disappear," he said. "We’re from the neighbourhood, and we want to make sure this space continues to smell of freshly baked bread, croissants, coffee, and pastries." The new bakery will maintain the spirit of an artisan forneria but will expand its offerings to include specialty takeaway coffee and a wider range of high-quality savoury items.

> "We come from Clot, a neighbourhood where we have grown, where we have our shops, and where every day we try to show that there is still a place for bakeries, pastry shops, and family businesses that contribute to the neighbourhood.", Forn Gil, Instagram announcement, 1 September 2026

The Gils’ Clot bakery, located at 261 Navas de Tolosa Street, was named the maker of the best traditional coca de Sant Joan in Catalonia in a 2026 competition organised by Sr. y Sra. Cake. The recognition highlighted their use of slow-fermented sourdough, high butter content, and natural flavourings such as Tahitian vanilla and orange blossom.
