## City plans 5,000 m² green zone with public input

The Barcelona City Council is moving forward with plans to develop approximately 5,000 m² of green space at La Magòria, as part of a wider urban transformation project in La Bordeta. The project, centred around a new full-size football pitch and underground municipal service facilities, aims to connect the neighbourhoods of La Bordeta, Hostafrancs and Font de la Guatlla by improving permeability and public access. According to the council, the green space will form a continuous link with the existing Jardins de Celestina Vigneaux and future green areas at Can Batlló. A participatory process will define the final design of the green areas. This includes interviews with stakeholders, working sessions with local organisations, a workshop with children from Escola Proa, and public input via the city’s Decidim platform. The informational phase runs until November 2026, with feedback sessions scheduled between February and March 2027.

## Residents fear loss of established garden

Despite the city’s plans, the Association of Residents and Affected Parties by the Magòria Project has voiced strong concerns. They argue that the current urban garden, known as Jardí de l’Estació, provides essential environmental benefits, including shade and stormwater absorption, which they fear will be diminished. Cristina Ibáñez, a member of the association, said: "We think it won't be a garden area, it will just be a transit area. It looks very nice on the plans because they've painted it green, but a significant part of that green is a sidewalk." The group also warns of a net loss in tree cover, noting that only four new trees are planned to replace the forty currently in place. They stress the importance of preserving the existing green space as a climate refuge amid rising urban temperatures.

> The debate should not be limited to the placement of trees or benches, but rather to preserving a green space that we claim as established.

The transformation is based on the winning 2019 architectural ideas competition entry, "Campus Magòria. Connecta-4", promoted by the city’s Urban Services, Sports and Ecology departments. Construction is set to begin in January 2028 and last three years, with a total budget of €36 million. The sports and municipal facilities will occupy 13,500 m² of built space, with cleaning and parks services located underground. Although critical of the plans, the residents’ association confirms it will participate in the consultation process to advocate for maximum conservation of green space.
