## Two Institutes Selected for Climate Control

The Generalitat will climate-control the first two public high schools in Barcelona, Institut Sants in the Sants neighbourhood and Institut Salvador Espriu in Clot, by June 2028\. This move ends the current situation in which none of the city’s 53 public secondary schools have air conditioning, according to the Barcelona Education Consortium. These two centres are the first on a list of 100 schools and institutes across Catalonia set to receive air conditioning before the end of the current legislative term. The broader plan aims to cool all 2,530 public educational centres in Catalonia by 2031, backed by an investment exceeding €2.5 billion.

> This is a first step that adds to the commitment to air-condition all public educational centres in Catalonia by 2031.

## City and Regional Plans Diverge

While the Generalitat is responsible for high schools, primary and secondary schools fall under Barcelona City Council’s Climate Plan. Since its 2024 launch, 84 of the city’s 170 primary and secondary schools have already been climate-controlled. Around 30 more will be air-conditioned in 2026 alone, funded by the tourist tax. The contrast is evident in other Catalan cities: Sabadell will climate-control five institutes over the next two years, while Lleida will act in two schools and seven institutes. Despite ongoing efforts, extreme heat continues to disrupt learning. This spring, students at Institut La Sedeta in Gràcia refused to attend class due to high temperatures, describing conditions as 'hellish'. At Institut Montserrat Roig, families were asked to sign authorisations allowing children to go home if classroom temperatures exceeded 27°C.
