## Farmers report major crop losses after flooding

Farmers in the Baix Llobregat region have lost significant portions of their harvests after heavy rains on Sunday and Monday caused streams to overflow. In Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Miquel Sàbat lost much of his tomato crop and between 25% and 30% of a newly planted cabbage harvest after the Can Isvert stream burst its banks in two places. The water submerged around 18,000 plants, which he fears will now be of lower quality even if they survive. Sàbat, who farms over one hectare adjacent to the stream, said the blockage was caused by accumulated reeds that had not been cleared. He had previously reported the poor condition of the stream, including losing a melon harvest last year under similar circumstances, but no preventive action was taken. A nearby stream in Sant Boi de Llobregat also overflowed, flooding artichoke fields belonging to Josep Casas and his cousin. They have been pumping water continuously for three days. Their Tudela white artichoke field, representing an investment of more than €15,000, remains at risk. "We don't know if we'll save the harvest," Casas said.

## Longstanding drainage issues ignored

Casas blamed a poorly maintained drainage channel that has flooded his fields repeatedly over the years. He said it had not been cleaned for a long time and warned that the same problem occurred eight years ago, when he lost all his crops. "We are paying the consequences of a problem that is not ours," he said. The farmer next door has already lost a large part of his cabbage harvest. Unió de Pagesos, the Catalan farmers' union, is calling on the Catalan Government and the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) to carry out essential maintenance on regional streams during summer months. The union stresses that clearing debris and vegetation could prevent blockages during heavy rainfall. The local council in Santa Coloma de Cervelló confirmed an accumulated rainfall of 130 litres per square metre and maintained its municipal emergency status under the Pla INUNCAT, the regional flood response plan. While the Generalitat has lifted mobility restrictions linked to the plan, the council continues to monitor incidents and keep emergency resources active [following the severe weather](https://www.santacolomadecervello.cat/actualitat/avisos/avis--actualitzacio-pla-inuncat.html?ref=barna.news).

### No immediate plans for preventive maintenance

While future work is planned on another local watercourse, the Can Via stream, it focuses on ecological restoration and public access rather than flood prevention. A project led by the Ajuntament de Santa Coloma de Cervelló and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), with a budget of €466,442.85, aims to transform the stream into a natural public space. The first phase is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027 and includes removing invasive American waterweed to improve ecological conditions [according to Diari de Catalunya](https://diaricatalunya.cat/en/baix-llobregat/santa-coloma-de-cervello/santa-coloma-de-cervello-recovers-can-via-stream-with-new-natural-space?ref=barna.news). However, this does not address the immediate maintenance concerns raised by farmers along the Can Isvert and other active channels.
