## Former Moderator Dies by Suicide

A former content moderator for Facebook, employed through subcontractor Telus at the Torre Glòries in Barcelona, has died by suicide. The woman, identified as Inés Mendoza, took her life on Sunday 4 October 2026 in Lyon, France, where she had been living for several months. She worked from 2022 until February 2025 filtering graphic content for Meta, including violent videos and images on Facebook and Instagram. According to Bastet Advocats, the law firm representing her family, Mendoza experienced acute psychological distress during her employment, including a prior suicide attempt in 2023\. She subsequently took medical leave and resigned in early 2025 after accepting what sources describe as a "meager" severance package.

## Legal Action Underway

Bastet Advocats confirms it is preparing civil claims against both Telus and Meta, seeking compensation estimated between €200,000 and €500,000\. The firm has not ruled out filing criminal charges. Mendoza’s case may be incorporated into a broader collective lawsuit involving approximately 700 former moderators who allege severe psychological harm due to their work. These employees claim they were subjected to inhuman working conditions, including reviewing up to 800 pieces of extreme content per day, such as murders, rapes, animal abuse, and child exploitation, with only about 30 seconds per item and minimal mental health support.

> The workload was unbearable for any human being.

This collective action follows earlier legal developments. In February 2024, a Barcelona court admitted criminal proceedings from a 26-year-old former employee suffering PTSD after exposure to traumatic material. In June 2025, 29 additional ex-moderators filed a lawsuit accusing the companies of treating workers "not as a person, but as an object to be replaced when they fall ill or resign."

## Pattern of Mental Health Crisis

Meta’s content moderation operation in Barcelona, run via CCC Barcelona Digital Services (later acquired by Telus International), has faced sustained scrutiny since its launch in 2018\. At its peak, the centre employed over 2,000 moderators. By May 2025, up to 25% of staff were on sick leave due to psychiatric disorders. In January 2025, another moderator filed formal complaints against both Telus and Meta, denouncing working conditions as "absolutely inhuman, indecent, and completely unbearable." Despite the closure of the moderation programme at Torre Glòries three months later, legal actions have continued. Meta has not responded to requests for comment. Telus was contacted but did not provide a statement.
