## Exhibition Opens Today, Inauguration Thursday

The exhibition 'ETSEIB 1851–2026: 175 Years Awakening the Ingenuity That Moves the World' opens to the public today, Wednesday 7 October 2026, at CASA SEAT in central Barcelona. While the exhibition runs from 9:00 to 21:00 daily until 17 October, the official inauguration ceremony will take place on Thursday 8 October at 18:00, led by UPC rector Francesc Torres and ETSEIB director Amaia Lusa. Prior registration is required to attend the inauguration. Located at Passeig de Gràcia, 109 / Avinguda Diagonal, 446, CASA SEAT will host the exhibition free of charge, offering residents and visitors a chance to explore the legacy of the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB), part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

## A Legacy of Innovation Since 1851

Founded in 1851, ETSEIB is the only industrial engineering school in Spain to have operated continuously for nearly two centuries. It began in the Convent of Sant Sebastià, now on Plaça d’Idrissa Diallo, where the inscription 'Escuela de Ingenieros Industriales' remains above the door. The school has played a pivotal role in Catalonia’s industrial, technological, and social development. Notable alumni include Santiago Rubió Tudurí, who designed Barcelona’s first metro line and the Montserrat funicular, and Esteve Terradas, responsible for the Transversal Metropolitan Railway. Ramon Perera, who coordinated the Civil War air-raid shelter network, also studied at ETSEIB. The exhibition highlights pioneering female engineers such as Isabel de Portugal Trabal, the first Catalan woman to graduate in Industrial Engineering in 1949, and Laura Carnicero, Vice President of People and Organization at Seat, who holds a doctorate from ETSEIB.

### Historic Firsts and Technological Milestones

ETSEIB has been at the forefront of technological progress in Spain. Professors and alumni contributed to Narcís Monturiol’s Ictíneu II, the world’s first steam-powered submarine, launched in 1860\. The school hosted the first telephone communication on the Iberian Peninsula in 1877 using Graham Bell devices and operated Spain’s first Edison phonograph in 1878\. It was also the first space in Spain to be illuminated by electricity.

## Engineering for the Future

The exhibition combines archival material with interactive experiences, showcasing a timeline of key milestones, impact stories, and student innovations. It also reflects on engineering’s role in addressing modern challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Live demonstrations feature student-built projects, including:

- Formula Student and MotoStudent racing vehicles by BCN eMotorsport and eRacing ETSEIB teams
- ARM2u’s robotic arm for people with limb amputations or malformations
- 3D printing innovations from Engilab, ETSEIB’s digital fabrication lab

These projects demonstrate how current students apply classroom knowledge to real-world design, manufacturing, robotics, and mobility challenges.

### Virtual Access and Future Events

A virtual version of the exhibition is available for those unable to attend in person, offering interactive content and unpublished historical materials. After its run at CASA SEAT, the exhibition will move to the ETSEIB campus. On 19 November 2026, an institutional closing event will be held at La Llotja de Mar at 18:00, marking the conclusion of the 175th anniversary celebrations.

> As part of the anniversary programme, a conversation will be held with five UPC alumnae named in Forbes España’s '50 Most Influential Women in Catalonia 2026' list.
